He seems more often than not to be recorded as Robert Arthur.
1891 census...Aged 6, he was at The Green, Tostock with his father John CLARKE [30] farm labourer; his mother Elizabeth [35]; half brother Edward C.Everitt [16] a general labourer born Elmswell, brother Edward [1]; sister Anne [8]. All except his half brother were born in Tostock 1901 census...Aged 16, Robert was a farm labourer, still at The Green, Tostock with his parents and brother John [9] born Tostock. 1911 census...Aged 26, Robert was a drapery warehouseman boarding at 5 Ireland Yard, London EC. His parents were still at Tostock Green. The pension card has his parents at Tostock Lane, Tostock. |
He enlisted in Whitehall.
The Battalion was in the area of the current junction of the D939 (Arras-Cambrai) and D34. The war diary has:- "Hostile artillery very active on our front and support trenches from midnight to 5 am this morning. Heavy calibre shells. Battalion relieved by the 7th Middlesex Regt, moved back to WANCOURT LINE as Left Reserve Battn on relief. Casualties for today 6 other ranks. Battalion remained in WANCOURT LINE till 19th inst."
