William Mayes was born in Sturmer ( Q1-1892 4A-712), son of George and Deborah MAYES (née ORRIS).

1901 census...Aged 9, he was "near the Maltings", The Street, Sturmer with his father George MAYES [52] farm labourer,; his mother Deborah [52] born Kedington; brothers Samuel [27] (barman), Charles Albert [22] stockman, Albert [17] (farm labourer), Harry [14] (stable boy) and George Ernest [12]; sister Harriet [19]. All except his mother were born in Sturmer.

1911 census...Aged 19, a domestic groom, he was at The Maltings, Sturmer, with his parents; brothers Samuel (no work) and Harry(domestic groom).

He married Wilma Jean (?) The Obituary Index gives this information but the marriage cannot be identified , hence no maiden name.


William enlisted in Haverhill. He died at Garden Farm, Fotheringay. Buried 14th November 1918 in the churchyard at Sturmer. No medal index card or medal roll entry have been found, possibly he never served abroad. He seems to have been mobilised in June 1917.
