No.14631879, Private, Stanley Victor CLAYDEN
Aged 19
Stanley Victor CLAYDEN was born in Steeple Bumpstead (Risbridge Q4-1924 4A:1353), son of Bob and Elizabeth Betsy CLAYDEN (née HAYES). Apparently his father died in 1935 and in 1939 it was possibly his widowed mother at 5 Council Houses, Steeple Bumpstead with his brothers George A[18], Robert R [15] and Reginald [13]. He would have been in the Army and therefore not on the 1939 register. |
The Royal Hampshire Regiment 1918-1954 by David Scott Danniell page 166. "The Battalion was in the line again on 6th April, once more in a mountain position on the Belvedere feature above Cassino. The Battalion's position was overlooked by the enemy on six-thousand-foot Monte Cairo, and once again all movement had to be made in darkness. the Battalion were in this position for two weeks , under incessant mortar and shell fire." The battalion had two killed that day. Initially buried according to 11GRU/RFW/2116, he was identified by the details on a cross and he was later re-interred at Cassino on 4th January 1945. photo: Commonwealth War Graves Commission click here to go to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website for full cemetery/memorial details |
