Stanley Jack Bunton was born in Steeple Bumpstead (Risbridge Q1-1897 4A:770), son of Henry and Lizzie BUNTON (née FARRANT).
Whether he was Stanley Jack or Jack Stanley seems to depend on the weather ! The family do appear to have used Stanley though. 1901 census...Aged 4, Stanley Jack was at North Street, Steeple Bumpstead with his father Henry BUNTON [32] boot maker born Steeple Bumpstead; his mother Lizzie [34] born Haverhill; brother Albert W [7] born Steeple Bumpstead. 1911 census...Aged 14, Stanley Jack ( no occupation) was at North Street still, with his parents (mother now recorded as born in Steeple Bumpstead. |

Jack enlisted in Steeple Bumpstead. Looking at his age and date of death, he must have lied about his age on enlistment.
As he died of wounds and his Army service record has not survived, it is impossible to say for sure when or where he was wounded. However the Haverhill Echo in June 1915 reported that Jack Bunton died in Aldershot in the military hospital. He had been wounded in the back by shrapnel in the fighting for Hill 60. His parents visited him and his mother was by his bedside when he died. Confusingly one of the military hospitals in Aldershot was named the Cambridge Hospital, and that was the one where he died. The Army record then had his name as John Stanley Bunton. |
