Victor Albert Bush was born in Ridgewell (Halstead Q2-1898 4A:701), son of James and Martha Emma BUSH (née RAWLING).

1901 census...Aged 2, he was at Mill Road, Ridgewell with his father James BUSH [32] stock man; his mother Martha Emma [32]; brothers Thomas James [11] and Arthur William [9]; sisters Lily Florence [6] and Doris Martha [10 months]. All were born in Ridgewell.

1911 census...Aged 12, he was at Drury Lane, Ridgewell with his parents, brothers Thomas James (farm labourer), Ronaold Leonard [5] and Fredrick Enoch [4]; sister Doris Martha. The 7 siblings all survive, the new brother being born in Ridgewell.


Victor enlisted in Chelmsford.

War Diary:-
27th..Between ALBERT and BOUZINCOURT. The enemy attacked the Bn on our left. 2 platoons of D Coy were sent them in support. We suffered 4 officers and 128 OR killed, missing or wounded.


Those casualties figures if accurate, suggest more than 2 platoons of the 9th Essex were involved. CWGC records give 13 killed.
