MOORE, John

No.83903, Gunner, John MOORE
Aged 26

88 Battery, Royal Field Artillery
Died from disease on 18th April 1900

It is not always possible to match the soldier with the civilian with these Boer War casualties.
That means I can only record "most likely to be" in many cases for the civilian identity

John Moore was born in Mildenhall (1st qtr 1875 MILDENHALL 4a:549) son of John and Mary MOORE (née AVEY)

1881 census...Aged 7, he was in West Row with his father John MOORE [37] market gardener; his mother Mary [35]; sisters Sarah [17], Annie [15], Emma [13], Sophia [12] and Kate [4]; brothers William [10], Joseph [2] and George [4 months]. All were born in Mildenhall.

1891 census...Aged 18, he was a Driver in the Royal Artillery at the Royal Artillery Barracks, Woolwich Dockyard. His father was at Weston Ditch Road, Mildenhall with his sister Kate, brothers Joseph, George and Isaac [8]. The rest of the family have not been found.

He died of disease at Orange River. That is an almost useless piece of information. The Orange River is the longest in the republic of South Africa, alomst cutting thcountry in half. The Orange River Colony ceased to exist in 1910 (the orange circle below) but was a large area in the south of the Orange Free State

His Queens South Africa medal carries the clasps for Cape Colony, Orange Free State

Hugh Miller is commemorated on the plaque in St.Mary's Church, Mildenhall
also St James's Park north-east corner. Royal Artillery Memorial. The Mall London
and Cornhill. Statue. County Bury St Edmunds Suffolk England
