That means I can only record "most likely to be" in many cases for the civilian identity William Saunders WOOLLARD was born Kirtling (2nd qtr 1865 Newmarket 3b:557) son of Joihn and Ann WOOLLARD (née HOWLETT). Baptised in Kirtling on 7th June 1865. There had been an earlier William Saunders WOOLLARD, born and died in 1861 1871 census...Aged 5, he was at Pear Terrace, Kirting with his father John WOOLLARD [41] boot and shoe maker; mother Ann [37] born Newmarket; brothers James [18] labourer, born Newmarket and Thomas [13] labourer; sisters Julia [8] and Susan [3]. All ezcept his mother and brother James were born in Kirtling. Newmarket 1881 census...Aged 14, he was at Cross Lane, Kirtling with his parents; sisters Susan, Mary [9] and Sarah [7]. 1891 census...Aged 25 he was visiting the PALMER family (his sister Agnes and brother in law) at Sandpits, Lakenheath with his father. In 4th qtr 1891 he married Kirtling born Annie SIMPKIN. They had 4 children, (all born in Kirtling):- William Percy [1892], Edith Alice [1894], Harry [1896] and James [1998] 1901 census...His widow and the 4 children were at Mill End, Kirtling. His parents were at Sharp's Hill, Kirtling His son Harry was killed in France in 1917 see here |

He died at Pretoria from Enteric fever. His Queen's South Africa medal carries the clasps for Cape Colony, Orange Free State and Transvaal
