John JARRALD was born in Haverhill (Risbridge Q4-1879 4A:508), son of John and Elizabeth JARRALD (née BASHAM).


1881 census...Aged 1, he was at Eden Road, Haverhill with his father John JARRALD [30] cutter in clothing factory, born Risby; his mother Elizabeth [29] cotton weaver; brothers Charles [7] and Harry [5]; sister Ellen [3]. All except his father were born in Haverhill.

1891 census...Aged 11, an errand boy, he was at Eden Road still, with his parents; brother Charles (printer compositor); sisters Ellen (factory warehouse), Fanny [9], Ann [6] and Edith [4]. The new sisters also born in Haverhill.

1901 census...Aged 21, a wool and fibre mat weaver, he was at 8 Primrose Hill, Haverhill with his parents and sisters Ellen (baster for cotton machinist), Fanny and Ann, (both cotton jacket machinists).

1911 census...Aged 31, coconut mat maker, he was at 8 Primrose Hill, Haverhill with his widower father and sisters Fanny and Ann. Of the 8 children, 2 had died. His mother died in 1905.


He enlisted in Bury St. Edmunds. An earlier number of 91 was from enlisting in Territorials. The 5th Battalion (Territorials) were formed in 1908, numbering from 1, "G" Company being Haverhill and Clare. He was with the Suffolks in Gallipoli, which must have been with the 5th Battalion, the date of arrival on his medal card is that of the arrival there of the 5th Suffolks.

In 1918 John was wounded and was returned home to be admitted to the No 2 Division War Hospital, Croydon where he died, aged 38 years on 5th April 1918.
John's body was brought back to Haverhill and he was buried here on 11th April 1918.



John Jarrald is buried in Haverhill Cemetery, grave S:67
and commemorated on Gurteen's Mat Department Roll of Honour and the West End Congregatonal Church
