The war diary for the 9th East Surreys:-
Dranoutre - 17/6/16- Divisional reserve - Furnished 250 men for working parties in the trenches.Whilst at work the enemy released gas, the party adjusted their gas helmets with remarkable promptitude and consequently suffered very little, only one man ( who always had a difficulty in wearing his helmet) being slightly gassed.

It then names an officer and several other ranks who were wounded, without mentioning which man was gassed and Jacob Ling's name does not appear there. CWGC records he was the only one of the 9th to die that day.
