Jacob Ling was born in Great Wratting (Risbridge Q3-1884 4A:600), baptised in St Mary's Great Wratting on 21st September 1884, son of Edward and Sarah Ann LING
(née MAYES).
1891 census...Aged 6, he was at Tghe Cottages, Moore's Pastrue, Great Wratting with his father Edward LING [35] farm labourer,born Gt Wratting; his mother Sarah Ann [34] born Barnardiston; sisters Susannah [13] and Elizabeth [12] both born in Barnardiston, Jane [9], Harriet [4] and Alice [2] all three born in Gt Wratting. 1901 census...Aged 16 farm labourer, he was at The Street, Great Wratting with his parents; sisters Harriet, Alice, Nellie [8] and Clara [6] both new girls born in Gr Wratting. 1911 census...Aged 26,single, farm labourer, he was at The Street, Gt Wratting with his parents; sisters Harriet and Clara, and nephew William LING [14] born Gt Wratting. All 8 siblings survived. |

He enlisted in Haverhill. From the note on his medal card is appears they were about to award him the 1914-1915 Star then realised he was 2 days too late for that. The war diary for the 9th East Surreys:- Dranoutre - 17/6/16- Divisional reserve - Furnished 250 men for working parties in the trenches.Whilst at work the enemy released gas, the party adjusted their gas helmets with remarkable promptitude and consequently suffered very little, only one man ( who always had a difficulty in wearing his helmet) being slightly gassed. It then names an officer and several other ranks who were wounded, without mentioning which man was gassed and Jacob Ling's name does not appear there. CWGC records he was the only one of the 9th to die that day.
