Jonathan James Barrett was born in Great Wratting (Risbridge Q2-1882 4A:564), baptised in St Mary's, Great Wratting on 23rd July 1982, son of Henry James and Harriet BARRETT (née MARTIN).

1891 census...Aged 8, he was at Cottage, Moore's Pasture, Great Wratting with his fasther henryJames BARRETT [46] farm labourer born Gt Wratting; his mother Harriet [40] born Kedington; brother Charles James [11] born Great Bradley.

1901 census...Aged 18, farm labourer, he was at Withersfield Road, Great Wratting with his parents and brother Charles (farm labourer).

On 14 May 1901 he enlisted in the Royal Field Artillery at Bury St Edmunds, giving his age as 18, he was 5 feet 2.25 inches tall, weighed 129 lbs,chest 34" to 36", blue eyes, fair hair and Church of England . It was noted he would attain height. Given number 15835. On 5th September he was tried for theft, and imprisoned, returning to duty on 25th November. On 13th August 1902 he was discharged as medically unfit, indifferent character and rejecting pension.He was to return to Great Wratting.

He married Hannah Elizabeth Frankland MYERS [5-8-1873] in Stonegrave,Yorkshire on 23rd November 1907 (Helmsey Q4 1907 9D:1023).

1911 census...Aged 28, a farm labourer, he was at White Houses, East Newton, Oswaldkirk, N.Yorkshire with his wife Hannah Elizabeth [38] born Yorkshire ; sons Jonathan Charles [3] born Lockton, nr Pickering, George Stanley [1] born East Newton; daughter Esther May [1 month] born East Newton.

The pension card has his widow at 15 Cross Street, Maltby, Rotherham with George Stanley (b. 8-3-1910), Esther May (10-3-1911), Bertha (16-9-1912) and Dorothy Muriel (8-7-1916). She re-married in 1920, in Rotherham, to Benjamin BENNETT.



He enlisted in Bawtry, Yorks.
The war diary has :-
Havrincourt - 20th November- Bn took part in attack.All objectives gained. 200 prisoners captured, 8 machine guns, 2 grenatenwerfers, 4 minewerfers captured. A large number of Huns killed. Division especially complimented by Commander in Chief, G.O.C. ARMY,GOC Corps. Bn left on CANAL du NORD, 2/2 K.O.Y.L.I. on the right.
Casualties:- 3 officers wounded, 21 other ranks killed, 101 wounded and 3 wounded (at duty).


CWGC records 25 killed of which 9 have no known grave and are named on the Cambrai Memorial.
