John Cyril BUGDEN, born Elm Farm, Suffield, Norfolk in 1889 (Erpingham Q3-1899 4B:60), son of John Henry and Sophia BUGDEN (née NEECH). After his death, at The Laurels, Rushmere, Lowestoft.

1891 census...Aged 1, he was at Elm Farm, The Street, Suffield, Erpingham, Norfolk with his father John H.BUGDEN [33] farmer born Skeyton, Norfolk; his mother Sophia [34] born Banningham, Norfolk; sisters Norah S.S. [7] and Mary M [6]; brother George H.A. [3]. All the children were born in Suffield.

1901 census...Aged 11, he was a pupil at the East Anglian School, headmaster Samuel B Leigh, in Bury St.Edmunds. His family were still at Elm Farm, Suffield with his sisters Nora S.S., Lizzie L [4] and Jeanie J [3] both born in Suffield.

1911 census...Aged 21 he was still at Elm Farm with his parents; brother George Henry Arnold and sister Alice Annette [19]. The two brothers were working on the family farm. Three of the ten siblings had already died.


He enlisted on 15th November 1915 in Perth, Western Australia. A labourer, aged 26 years 8 months, he was 5 feet 6.24 inches (168.3 cm)tall, chest 35" to 38" (88.9 to 96.5 cm), weighing 146 lbs (66.4 kg) with blue eyes, fair hair, Church of England.

Embarked per A69 "Warilda" from Freemantle on 12th February 1916. Taken on strength of 3rd Training Regiment, Heliopolis 15th March 1916 and reported sick to the 4th Auxiliary Hospital on 16th with an injury to his arm. Released to duty 1st April 1916. and was transferred to 4th Div Ammunition Column, Serapeum, Alexandria on 8th April 1916 arriving 25th May. Joined British Expeditionary Force via Alexandria 6th June and on MT Quina to Marseilles arriving 12th June and immediately admitted to No 2 Australian General Hospital with pneumonia. This worsened by 15th and he died there.

He died of broncho-pneumonia and carbuncle on face at No 2 Australian General Hospital, Marseilles and initially buried in St Pierre Cemetery. Sister Nora Sarah Sophia WRIGHT (deceased) - enquiries were made on behalf of her estate in 1951. His personal belongings, Discs (2), wallet, letter and photo sent to his father at Elm Farm, Suffield on 28 September 1916
