Frederick Martin was born in Clare (Risbridge Q3-1889 4a:637), the son of William and Alice MARTIN (née PARKER)

1889 census...Aged 1, Frederick MARTIN was at Malting Lane, Clare with is father William [29] a farm labourer; his mother Alice [28]; brothers George [9] and William [4] and sister Sarah [7]. All were born Clare

1901 census...Aged 11, he was at Bridewell Street, Clare with his parents; brothers Bertie [5] and English Robert [1] and sister Anne [3], all Clare born.

In 1910, qtr 3, he married Alice Hannah PLEDGER [4-4-1887]

1911 census...Aged 21, a grocer's warehouseman, he was at Nethergate Street, Clare with his Hundon born wife. Their daughter Lilian Alice was born on 16 December 1911.

The family later moved to St.Osyth Road, Clacton on Sea

His brother William was killed in action in Greece in April 1918 see here




He enlisted in Clacton on Sea.

The battalion war diary has
23-/3/1918 - Arras.....Withdrawal to third system complete. Bn HQ closed at Rue Farm, St Adrin at 10-30 am and re-opened at the Citadel, Arras at 12 noon close by Divisional HQ. During the withdrawal to third system all Coys left two guns at the disposal of each Brigade. "B" Coy reported that owing to the morning large masses of enemy advanced right onto their two guns before they could be observed, and after inflicting many casualties on the enemy only succeeded in withdrawing one gun. The enemy followed up our withdrawal very quickly and by 11:30 was reported in CONGO TRENCH and in Les Fossis Farm and in front of Monchy le Peux. Bn transport moved frm ARRAS to DAINVILLE after suffering slight casualties in trenches from effects of enamy long range shell fire.
