1891 census...Aged 2, he was at 20 Southgate Street with his father John LAST [31] bricklayer's labourer; his mother Alice [30] born Hargrave; brother Walter [2] and sister Hetty [10 months]. Also a visitor, Robert MIZEN [24] born Hargrave (his uncle ?). His father and siblings were born in Bury St.Edmunds 1901 census...Aged 12, he was at 58 Southgate Street with his parents who are both now recorded as RICHARDSON; brothers Walter and John LAST; sister Hettie LAST. 1911 census...Aged 22, a coal porter, he was at 65 Southgate Street with his widowed mother (now LAST again); brother John (domestic groom) and a boarder Alfred RICHARDSON [51] bricklayer's labourer born Bury St.Edmunds. His brother Walter served in the 2nd Suffolks (2458) and survived the war. |
He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds. The 19th was the first time the Germans used phosgene gas. The War Diary has 19 Dec 1915... 5.30am Gas attack opened, rapid fire, the Germans did not come over the parapet, very heavy shelling gas cleared at 7.30 pm. Telephone wires cut between coys. B.Coy. in FORWARD COTTAGE trench relieved by 1 Coy 2/York & Lancaster.
