Charles Hurrell was born in Barnardiston on 29th June 1893 (Risbridge Q3-1893 4A:698), baptised in All Saints, Barnardiston on 13th July 1894, son of Joseph and Kate Abigail HURRELL (née LANE), later of 162, Barnardiston.

1901 census...Aged 7, he was at Corner Cottage, Bury Road, Barnardiston with his father Joseph HURRELL [40] carter on farm; his mother Kate [40] born Great Wratting; brothers Herbert [17] and Albert [12] both farm labourers, Frederick [10] and Ernest [3]; sisters Ada [7] and Rose [6]. All except his mother were born in Barnardiston.

1911 census...Aged 17, he was in 165 Barnardiston with his parents; brothers Frederick and Ernest; sisters Rose and Martha [9] born Barnardiston. All the males were farm labourers.



He enlisted in Haverhill.

The battalion were manning trenches in the Monchy area, routine maintenance and repair of trenches damaged by shell fire.

CWGC records Charles as one of only three men of the battalion to die that day.
