Horace Brett was born in Barnardiston on April 3rd 1896 (Risbridge Q2-1896 4A:735), baptised in All Saints, Barnardiston on 21st June 1896, son of George and Caroline Amy BRETT (née CARTER).

1901 census...Aged 4, he was at Bury Road, Barnardiston with his father George BRETT [39] farm foreman; his mother Amy Caroline [35] born West Wratting; brothers George [15] stock man and Harold [2]; sisters Ethel [11] and Lily [7]. All except his mother were born in Barnardiston.

1911 census...Aged 14, a farm labourer, he was at Barnardiston with his parents; brothers Harold [12] and Stanley [6] and sister Ella [9] all born Barnardiston. One sibling of the eight had died.

He enlisted in Stradishall.
Just south east of Gonnelieu....The battalion had been relieved on 29th and sent back in Reserve, less than half mile behind the front line, resting in a sunken road with HQ being in Cheshire Quarry. The position, being only intended as temporary, had no trench system. Early in the morning of the 30th the Germans opened a severe barrage and counter-attacked, covered by aircraft. HQ and "A" Company were quickly surrounded and captured. The enemy broke through on the right and were then able to attack the battalion from the rear, resulting in 13 Officers and 219 other ranks being reported missing.

CWGC gives the eventual death toll as 33, none with a known grave.
