"ICKLINGHAM WAR MEMORIAL PLAQUE"

To the eternal memory of the men of ICKLINGHAM who died in the service of their country
Eleven in the Great War of 1914-1919 and Two in 1939-145

As well as the Weather Heath Memorial (Elveden Column beside the A11), the church of St. James, Icklingham has mounted on the wall inside a plaque commemorating the fallen of the village from the 2 world wars.

Two brass plates, mounted on wood, are surrounded by British Legion standards. The larger plate is inscribed:-

"TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF" in an arc above a shield of St George's Cross, surmounted by a crown and supported on either side by a banner, then the 11 names giving rank, forename, surname and unit, apparently in order of the date they fell and under them
"THIS TABLET WAS ERECTED BY PARISHIONERS TO MEN OF ICKLINGHAM WHO SERVED AND FELL DURING THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918". "DEATH IS SWALLOWED UP IN VICTORY."

beneath that a smaller plate with "ALSO IN MEMORY OF" then the names and then "WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES DURING THE WAR OF 1939-1945"

Charles Linge is not listed on the Icklingham face of the Elveden Column, but on the Elveden face, and he is also commemorated on the Elveden WW1 memorial in the Church of St. Andrew and St. Patrick.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old,
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning,
We will remember them.
