STOCK, Frederick

No.83496, Gunner, Fred STOCK
Aged 21

"C" Battery, 156th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery
Died of his Wounds on Friday, 26th April 1918

It seems more than likely that this is Frederick Stock, son of Isaac and Esther STOCK (née SORRELL) born in Castle Camps in 1893 (Linton Q2-1893 3B:517) and baptised in Castle Camps on 4th June 1893 the family being at Endway, Castle Camps

1901 census...Aged 8 , he was at Endway, Castle Camps with his father Isaac STOCK [65] farm labourer; his mother Ester [43] born Helions Bumpstead, Essex; brothers Francis [22] and George [15] farm labourers; sister Edie 12. All except his mother were born in Castle Camps. There was in 1891 another brother, James [7] and a sister Alice [10], both born in Castle Camps.

1911 census...Fred not found, but his parents and sister Annie were at Endway, Castle Camps. Two of the nine siblings had died.

It seems that his mother died in 1914 and his father in 1915, both deaths registered in Linton.

It surely can not be co-incidence that this set of siblings belong to two different men, however the "Soldiers Died" records him as born and enlisted in Howden, Yorkshire. There were no STOCKs in Howden in 1911 Fred,(above) had siblings Francis, Sarah Ann (died in 1888), Alice, James, George, Edith and Annie. The Personal Effects entry for Gunner STOCK has as legatees Brother Francis; brother James; brother George who relinquished his share to his wife Eleanor; Mrs Edith Pettit (not found that marriage so far); Mrs Annie Farrant ( Annie Stock married Albert Farrant 1914 in Saffron Walden); brother James and sister Edith COTHER (Edith married Edwin Cother in Linton 1900

Finding where any Artilleryman was on a given date is nigh on impossible and as Fred died of his wounds, and his Service record is not available, it is completely impossible. However, his unit were near Zonnebeke, supporting an unsuccessful counter attack on Wytschaete and on the 18th "C" Battery was shelled. They also had 4 killed on the 21st.
