"BIRDBROOK WAR MEMORIAL"
To the eternal memory of the men of BIRDBROOK who died in the service of their country
go BACK to Birdbrook home page They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old,
Eleven in the Great War of 1914-1919 and three in 1939-1945 and one man in Korea
Within the churchyard of St Augustine of Canterbry, the war memorial,in Portland stone, is a cross bottony atop a tapered octagonal shaft on a tapered octagonal
plinth, all set on a three stepped octagonal base.
On a base about 2 metres square and overall height of about 5 metres
The dedications on the plinth read:-
In addition each man has his name, regiment and year of death carved on a choir stall with
his regimental badge on the panel above
The parish, as part of recent custom, as well as the Birdbrook names,
read out the names of the crew of the American Flying Fortress from the Ridgewell airbase that crashed in the parish in 1944 killing all those on board.
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning,
We will remember them.
