1901 census...Aged 6, he was at 9 Church Row, Bury St.Edmunds, with his mother Emily PALLANT [35] born Wordwell; brothers Walter George [8] and Alfred W T [3]. All the children were born in Bury St.Edmunds. His father not found in this census ( in 1891 he was in the Army) 1911 census...Aged 16, an errand boy, he was at 4 St Edmunds Place,Bury St.Edmunds with his father Alfred George PALLANT [49] labourer born Benhall; his mother; brothers Walter George (painter in foundry, Alfred and Albert Edward [6] born Woolwich; sister Edith May [7] born Colchester. |

The Battalion was in trenches by Reninghelst, the War Diary has:- The Brigadier visited Battn HQ, stayed to tea, went the grand tour of the trenches with the CO, ending up with the DU MOL CT. At 9:00 pm news came that the Germans were using obnoxious gas (against the North Midland Division) which hurt mens eyes. Fighting at Hill 60 had been heard every night lately. 8380 Pte. C Berry -9008 Pte J Pallant and 9262 Pte A Skillings killed - 11 men wounded. 23rd...
